little bb has been learning different strategies to do addition and subtraction at school

i never knew there are so many different ways and their names...

when i was at school, it was just one way and we had to memorize it hard.

now with little bb, he is exposed to different means and he even gets to choose his way in tests...

i really appreciate the way of teaching...

i.e. there are never just one way, one means

be creative, be fluid, be flexible

find a way that suits yourself best.

2017 sports day

A post shared by Aileen Is Motu (@aileenmotu) on

one of the reasons why we love this school
is the values they instill into the kids

for instance
the annual sports day

they made it clear that

it is
about competition

it is not
about who is the best

it is not
about who is the fastest

it is about

it is about

it is about

at the end of the day,
there is no award, no medal, no champion, no nothing

everyone gets a flag for having participated.

all the kids were having fun,
giving their best,
didn't compare,
didn't complain...

they were given opportunities to participate in all the games and activities

totally opposite of the kind of sports day i had when i was at school.

all i could remember was that
each and every year,
it was always the same group of girls who were good at sports
who got to run, jump, throw
and got all the awards, medals.

girls like me,
good at nothing,
would just sit on the bench and chit chat the day away...

i really appreciate what the school and the teachers are teaching and showing the kids....

sports should be fun, should be inclusive
it shouldn't make anyone feel inferior

to us, the best part was
parents got to participate too!

parents vs. kids

and of course,
the parents let the kids win!

i am a handsome paperclip

where did i get this conclusion from?

case #1:

one night,
before bedtime,
as usual,
i asked how was his day at school.
he looked sad and told me he got bullied on the school bus today.

hearing this word,
i was all awakened
and i let him tell me what happened at his own pace.

it turned out higher grade kids were saying mean things to him and other kids...
i asked him exactly what did they say
all he could tell me was they made funny sounds at him...

didn't sound too serious so i calmed him down
and said his reaction on the school bus was a good choice.

the next day,
the nannies asked me whether i knew what happened yesterday.
i told them what i knew.

didn't think it was serious....
but the nannies told him little bb was crying when he got off from the school bus
and didn't stop crying until home.

ok, quite serious...

when i asked what did they know...  they started telling me the older kids said something about me...
hmm... getting more serious and i almost was going to reach out to the teacher...

what actually happened?

so it turned out some older kids were joking around...

and they said to little bb, "your mom is a paper clip!"

when i heard this from the nannies,
i thought i heard it wrong....
i double checked and tripled checked with them
.... confirmed i am a paper clip!

we looked at each other and couldn't help but break out laughing hard!

but the nannies said, "don't laugh mom....  he said he is so upset he doesn't want to talk about this ever!"
and they said they had to hold back from laughing when little bb was telling them this
because they knew little bb would get even more upset if they laughed!
so they had to wait till they were in the kitchen to giggle!

that night, i asked little bb again...
he refused to tell me...  and kept saying "i don't want to talk about this!"

i held him close and calmed him down
asked him whether i really do look like a paper clip...
so i told him it's really ok....

(seriously though,
nothing happened after this....
so i didn't reach out to the teachers...)

case #2:

it happened on the birthday celebration at school
as mentioned in the older post,
some kids stared at me and exclaimed
"your mom is so handsome!"

his first ever *school* picnic

took the morning off
for bbb's school picnic

when i told my boss why i needed half day off
she went like
"you mean the big one right?"
the little one...
"the little one?  i thought he hasn't started school yet?!"

that's right
he is only going to playgroup
they are starting things earlier and earlier...
soon, they will expect toddlers to write an essay for their own school application
no kidding!

it was a nice and i found out bbb has a good friend in class
