year of the horse

of the few chinese new year art work little bb did this year,
i like this one the most....

simply because i like how he crumbled the gold color paper into a chinese mandarin
and of course the glittery pieces he glued to form the chinese character for big ""
(i love glitters)

we haven't really started talking to little bb about saying festive greetings politely during the chinese new year period this year as we are quite slow with these things.
but one day out of the blue,
little bb wrapped his right hand around his left fist and said " 恭喜, 恭喜"
then he told us that it will be the year of the horse.

immediately i felt a bit relieved....
at least, he is getting something out from school!

almost 9 out of 10 times when i asked little bb what did he do at school that day,
he would give me a blank look and run away...

wishing everyone a blessed and happy year of the horse!

little artists picnicking

our little "artists" finished their pieces in no time...
little bb's piece is about racing track (??!!!)
obviously it doesn't really go with the theme of the day!!!
little bb classmate's piece has four suns!!!!!

for their age, i think it was already very good *laugh*!

it was about participation and the experience...

soon after they were done, we took a quick tour of the flower market nearby...
the little ones had more fun seeing all the interesting things at the stalls
than the drawing....  *laugh*

this one is taken shortly before we packed up and left the drawing competition...
as said above,
the two finished in no time...
and started munching away........
little bb said "picnic"!
right then, i saw some reporters standing in front of us with cameras and mics.
we looked around and saw the event guests and some celebrities talking to
a girl behind us... and the reporters taking photos of them over our heads....
the little girl was very serious about her drawing and had brought along her own drawing tools...

looking at her and looking at ourselves
we couldn't help but giggled!

they must think we were at the wrong place!

we love this picture of big contrast!
i love the big smile on little bb's face!

his first encounter

boyboy,  passed away in the morning of last friday
he slept and never woke up again...

he was a 17 years old schnauzer who had traveled round the world quite a bit...

he was brought home by somotu's younger brother.
he had a very good temper though always had a serious look.

he was cremated yesterday.
the whole process is saddening and heartbreaking.....

and then came the explanation part to little bb.
it was done by somotu.

little bb kept asking why...
where did boyboy go
why we grow old...
whether mami is old...
whether dadi is old...

boyboy grew old and went to a far away place
and the day will come
when mami and dadi grow old and have to leave.

when i got home that night,
i hugged both brownie and sugar longer and tighter than ever.

taking his task seriously.... II

i am a coffee addict
he is a coffee making addict

he is the one to add sugar and milk every time....
he keeps asking why he can't drink coffee...

open day at the fire station
super crowded but the boys had loads of fun
watching the fire rescue demo
lining up for the paramedic motorbike
checking out the fire engines
seeing the fire engines in action

homemade granola

i like granola bars, crunchy oat flakes and clusters, etc...
but never thought of making them myself
until when two colleagues brought their own version of homemade granola to work.
i was reassured that they are very easy to make....
so i picked up ingredients that i didn't have at home on the way home back from office
and made them last night.

we don't have an oven (yet) and so i could only use the toaster...
i have under-estimated the power of the toaster!
since it's smaller and the baking tray is closer to heat,
a roll of the oat was burnt!

the rest came out super crispy and rich in taste....
and to my surprise, not only somotu was willing to try
(he is very picky with food),
he kept coming back for more!

as for little bb, i must say he knows how to eat granola.
he grabbed a spoonful and added them to his apples!

will surely be trying out different flavors and ingredients.

this is the recipe i used
but made changes as follows:
- no wheat germ (as i couldn't find them in the market)
- no walnut or almond (as i don't fancy them)
- no sesame seeds (don't have them)
- further reduced the amount of oil used
- instead of brown sugar alone, i mixed brown sugar and vanilla bean sugar (i love vanilla)
- added vanilla oil (love love love vanilla)
- doubled the amount of cinnamon
- sprinkled in a bit of nutmeg
- added dried cranberries, cherries and black currant

loving the little wooden spoon i got from tokyo a couple years ago
and stackable containers from gelato pique.

our little assistant

wearing socks is, to little bb, the easiest part of getting himself dressed,
(though he still gets the ankle side up instead of fitting it round his ankle,
but i think one day he will realize that the other side is more comfortable!
sometimes there is only so much you can keep reminding these little ones
who like to think they know best *wink*!)
especially when we have a helping hand...
sugar likes to watch and make sure little bb gets his job done.
and she will jump all over little bb whenever he refuses to get into the shower!

they are not fries!
but they do turn out to look like fries in pictures...

they are orangettes
and i love them!

like last year,
got a pack of them as part of my xmas present from joanna...
i finished them in no time...

feeling bad that i always waited for the ones made by joanna,
i decided to make my own.

i used this recipe i found
but skipped the chocolate
and mixed vanilla bean sugar with coarse sugar.

hmmm hmmmmmm hmmmmmmmm
little bb likes them as much as i do!

just right

it was made too big back then,
it's just right....

bibs are the easiest thing to make when time is limited..
too bad little bb is growing out of the phase needing bibs...

i should dig this one out and get little bb to use it
before he is really too big a boy to be using them!
