bad parents

about three weeks ago,
brownie and sugar have a full dental cleaning under anaesthesia....

i had wanted them to have one for a long time
as i know oral hygiene is important for their long term health
but somotu was concerned about them being too "old" for anaesthesia
(that they might not "wake" up)

but then recently, they have really bad breath
one night, when i checked their mouth,
to my horror, both have loose teeth....  very loose ....
and sugar seemed to have lost one tooth.

took them to the vet and was told they both definitely needed a full dental cleaning...
although brownie is 9 and sugar is 7 (marginally old in terms of getting anaesthesia),
they should still be fine to have full anaesthesia...
loose teeth are harmful to their health as well as useless...

it was a friday morning when we took them to the vet...
they started shaking and whining when we were still a few blocks away from the vet...
they knew...

they both cling onto me while being placed on the exam table...
i felt very bad for making them go through this...

i should have taken better care of them
my only excuse is that since the arrival of little bb, i have less and less time for brownie and sugar
and i have slackened on their dental care...
(somotu thinks he has delegated this task to me all along so it's not him who has slackened...  )

late afternoon, we left work earlier to pick them up...
i wasn't too ready to hear from the vet what was the damage...
somotu was relatively calm (at least on the surface)
(i was glad that the vet didn't give us a lecture for not taking good care of them)...

while waiting for brownie and sugar to be brought to us,
the vet told us it was pretty bad
and to my surprise, brownie was worst....  10 teeth!!!  altogether 10 teeth!!!
10 teeth was removed.....
i almost burst into tears.....
especially when the removed teeth were all laid out on the table in front of us...
it was slightly better for sugar... 5 teeth...

naturally the first question was how will they be able to eat from now on...
the vet reassured us that they would manage....
since the ones that were removed were all either bad or loose,
they were useless anyway...
and probably brownie and sugar have been avoiding the bad ones when they ate anyway...

with the weak and drowsy babies in our arms
we humbly listened to the vet's instructions on how to care for their teeth going forward...

sorry my babies,
we have been bad parents....
despite your dislike,
i will need to brush your teeth every night and spray your mouth every morning...

p.s.
some good tips on dental care for pets here, here and here..

p.p.s.
their teeth are still sparkling clean ^_^
and their mouth don't smell a thing anymore!

p.p.p.s.
somotu continues his delegation of the cleaning task to me...
the additional thing he does every night is,
"mami, have you brushed their teeth?"
